# 4.2 Process – What does the machine do?

The first step is about understanding the process.\
The process describes the logical sequence of the machine – independent of technology or hardware.

Example:\
"A workpiece is loaded, clamped, machined and removed."

Each of these sentences is already a potential state in the control logic:

* Load part → State 1
* Clamp → State 2
* Machine → State 3
* Unclamp → State 4
* Remove → State 5

The result of this step is a logical sequence of states – the basis for the control logic.
